jam 2026-08 musical dialogueS in Berkeley

where

These venues support musical dialogue and developing your listening ears. I live at the tail end of San Francisco, but I should just live on this block. I've been watching a ton at the Freight all summer and will soon start rehearsing with a charanga ensemble at a school down the block. I'm making music at the Starry Plough several times a month.

Glory Jam

These open-form jams on Thursday nights are a good place to express all the crazy that I accumulate between recording sessions and rehearsals and shows. Coming off an extended dialogue between a violin and a trombone, with some synth sounds sprinkled in, I found myself saying, "I missed this so much!" (well, I was wailing and sighing on my violin, instead of speaking English).

Singjam

This is a group gathering on select Saturday afternoons and nights at the Starry Plough. If you enjoy having all the lyrics on the wall to take that cognitive load off your overworked brain, then show up and kick back.

The Freight and Salvage

Concerts galore, different regional folk music workshops, and a well-behaved audience. Invite me to play a concert here! (I'm in Berkeley with my violin 3x a week).

Las Mermeladas at La Peña

is a family-friendly jam where I can practice feeling the groove and playing odd rhythms. I didn't grow up with this traditional music; fortunately, part of the tradition is welcoming in strangers like me. https://lapena.org/series/el-regreso-de-las-mermeladas-a-la-pena/ (also, I just learned the word for "jam" in Spanish).

Berkeley JazzSchool

Charanga ensemble meets here on Thursdays in the fall. Charanga is a genre of Latin folk music.

Cover charge or cover donation goes toward musicians' chiropractors as they lug tons of boxes into and out of these intimate and storied halls.

Calendar events and map pins are found at [my beginner-friendly jam listing](ninaviolina.com/jamboreena), where I call out a handful of jams and gatherings where you are most likely to find your fit. If you'd rather watch than jam, check out a [show](ninaviolina.com/shows) and kick back and relax.

Innnnn conclusion

These 4 venues are located 5 minutes from each other. Follow the scent of harmony, community, and JAMMY JAMZ.
